Traditional barn style outbuildings
Traditional barns

A more recent development has involved the production of a range of traditional barn style outbuildings. These are based on a Sussex haywain barn and are built using mortise and tenon joints with oak pegs. A basic single bay barn is 12 feet wide by 18 feet deep with a clearance height of 8 feet. The most popular style to date is the two-bay barn – 22 feet wide by 18 feet deep. Each barn is hand built to the client’s specification – we have yet to build two barns the same! Options available include gable ends, half or full hipped roof, open front or doors.

The client puts in a concrete base with a foundation wall at least 12 inches high upon which we set the barn frame. Cladding is traditional waney edged overlapped boards (we can supply shiplap etc as an alternative). We leave the barn with rafters etc ready for roofing. So far clients have used natural slate, tiles and thatch. The final choice of roofing material must be known in advance as the pitch of the roof must suit whatever material is chosen. We mill the timber ourselves for the barns using FSC certified Douglas fir or we can use oak if the client so wishes. Douglas fir is strong attractive softwood which with age mellows to a very attractive silvery grey colour. Please call or e-mail for further information on our barns.
