David Smyth left the Department of Agriculture Forest Service in May 1991 to set up one of Ireland’s first mobile sawmilling services. He has processed logs for such organisations as the National Trust, Coillte Teo (the Irish Forestry Board), furniture makers, private estates and many more besides gaining a country-wide reputation for both his service and knowledge of timber and its conversion. The business further developed as David began to supply niche markets with products which were hard, if not impossible to find at a reasonable price.

With the idea in mind of adding further value to his timber and cutting out the middle men in the process he began to develop skills in the post and beam building method. This has led to him making a range of traditional barn style outbuildings and to the making of green oak roof trusses etc. Sawmilling is still on the agenda and today the emphasis is very much on the bespoke jobs such as supplying oak for the rebuilding of the cannon gun carriages on the Walls of Derry.
